4. Establish signals. Establish the “yes”, “no”, and “I-am-not-willing-to-answer-now” signals. These signals should be practiced in the sense of giving the client many easy opportunities to give unambiguous responses. Age regression may be tried at this point. Clients generally slip into a trance at this stage. You can assist this by suggesting, “You may find it easier to respond with your eyes closed, and by becoming even more comfortable as I continue to ask these questions.”

5. Nature of problem. One presumes that, since the client is coming to the hypnotherapist, the presenting problem is psychological or emotional in nature and that its origins were also psychological. However, it is always worthwhile asking, “Is the origin of what you have come here about organic or physical in nature?” What if the client’s body “knows” that the origin is in some hormonal imbalance, neurological disorder, cancer, or other physical impairment? While in a trance state, automatic responses may respond to unconscious biological information. At any rate, it is important to check on this possibility and, if necessary, refer to the medical profession. For some presenting problems checking on “organ language” may be important.
